Our Goals

The goals of Richmond Tamil School is to provide a fun and interactive learning experience to the kids of Tamil community in Richmond to sufficiently learn Tamil language to be able to practically understand, speak, read, and write Tamil.

The objective is not to make the kids experts in Tamil language, but rather teach them enough to enable them a) to enjoy a conversation with grandparents and parents, b) to have a fun family time watching a Tamil movie with the whole family, c) to be able to manage getting around when they are in Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil speaking community in Richmond, VA is growing at a rapid pace and we want these children to have the opportunity to learn the language that their parents and family spoke at home and love eternally. Being a multilingual has several advantages that extend beyond linguistic knowledge. It has substantial cognitive, social, personal, academic, economic, and professional benefits that have been well documented. We believe that this effort will go a long way in stimulating children’s brains and achieving the benefits listed above.

At Richmond Tamil School, we follow the American Tamil Academy (“ATA”) curriculum. ATA is a volunteer-run organization of Tamil School members who have worked to develop a common syllabus that addresses the Tamil-instruction needs of those learning/teaching Tamil in the United States. Accordingly, ATA has developed text books, exercise books and other multimedia resources.  Richmond Tamil School currently teaches Tamil to over 100 kids, in 6 levels, with the help of about 15 volunteers. Students are assigned to courses based upon their age and current knowledge of Tamil. Our long term goal is to develop our content so that the children will be able to receive language credit at their public schools for attending Tamil classes.

இரிச்மண்டு தமிழ்ப் பள்ளியில் பாடத்திட்டங்கள் தற்போது அமெரிக்கத் தமிழ்க் கல்விக்கழகத்தின் பாடத்திட்டங்களின் அடிப்படையில் நடத்தப் படுகின்றன.

குழந்தைகளின் வயதும் தமிழ்க்கல்வியறிவில் முன் அனுபவமும் கொண்டு கீழ்க்காணும் பல நிலைகளில் வகுப்புகள் நடைபெறுகின்றன.

 

Levels & Teachers (2020-2021):

 

Mazhalai Level

Mazhalai class is conducted for children ages 5-6. Children in Kindergarten are admitted to Mazhalai class.

The lessons are designed for children to learn Tamil through the pictures, stories, and songs in order to create interest in learning Tamil. The lessons cover Tamil Letters, conversation, stories, songs, a few words currently in use and animation with audio and video facilities.

Level 1 - நிலை - 1

Nilai 1 class is for children aged 5-6 with no prior Tamil knowledge. School Grade 1 is the right criteria for this class.

The lessons cover Tamil Letters, conversation, stories, songs, a few words currently in use and animation with audio and video facilities. Mastering 12 vowels and 18 consonants is the main objective of this level.

நிலை 1 என்பது ஐந்து-ஆறு வயதுக் குழந்தைகளுக்காக நடத்தப்படும் வகுப்பு. அதே நேரத்தில் தமிழில் அறிமுகம் இல்லாத பெரிய குழந்தைகளும் இந்த வகுப்பில் சேருவார்கள்.

இந்த வகுப்பில் எழுத்துகள், உரையாடல், கதைகள், பாடல்கள், வழக்குச் சொற்கள், எண்கள் ஆகியவை படங்கள், இயக்கப் படங்கள், ஒலி, ஒளிக் காட்சிகள் வாயிலாக வழங்கப்படுகின்றன. 12 உயிரெழுத்துகளும், 18 மெய்யெழுத்துகளும் கற்றுத் தேர்தல் இந்நிலையின் குறிக்கோள்.

Level 2 - நிலை – 2

Nilai 2 class is for Children above age 7. Nilai 1 level knowledge is expected as a prerequisite. Attending 2nd grade in school is the right criteria for this class.

The lessons cover Tamil Letters, words, small phrases, conversation, stories, songs. At this level, there is additional focus on  reading and writing. Mastering uyirmey letters (vowel+consonant) from அ to ஊ is the main objective of this level.

நிலை 2 என்பது ஏழு வயதுக்கு மேலான குழந்தைகளுக்காக நடத்தப்படும் வகுப்பு. நிலை 1 தேர்ச்சி எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும்.

இந்த வகுப்பில் எழுத்துகள், சொற்கள், சிறிய சொற்றொடர்கள், உரையாடல், கதைகள், பாடல்கள், வழக்குச் சொற்கள், எண்கள் ஆகியவை வழங்கப்படுகின்றன. உயிர்மெய் எழுத்துகளில் "அ" முதல் "ஊ" வரிசை வரையான எழுத்துகளைக்  கற்றுத் தேர்தல் இந்நிலையின் குறிக்கோள்.

Level 3- நிலை – 3

Nilai 3 class for children 8 and above. Nilai 2 level knowledge is expected as a prerequisite.

The lessons cover Tamil Letters, words, small phrases, conversation, stories, songs. More focus on reading and writing is given. Mastering all uyirmey letters (vowel+consonant) is the main objective of this level.

நிலை 3 என்பது எட்டு வயதுக்கு மேலான குழந்தைகளுக்காக நடத்தப்படும் வகுப்பு. நிலை 2 தேர்ச்சி கட்டாயமாக எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும்.

இந்த வகுப்பில் எழுத்துகள், சொற்கள், சிறிய சொற்றொடர்கள், உரையாடல், கதைகள், பாடல்கள், வழக்குச் சொற்கள், எண்கள் ஆகியவை வழங்கப்படுகின்றன. அனைத்து உயிர்மெய் எழுத்துகளையும் கற்றுத் தேர்தல் இந்நிலையின் குறிக்கோள்.  இதன்படி, தமிழ்ச் சொற்கள், சிறிய வாக்கியங்கள் எழுதுவது, படிப்பது ஆகியவற்றுக்குக் கவனம் செலுத்தப்படும்.

Level 4 - நிலை – 4

Nilai 4 class is an intermediate class conducted for children with the basic Tamil proficiency. Nilai 3 level knowledge is a must as a prerequisite. Otherwise, children must have learned Tamil elsewhere and should be equally proficient.

The lessons cover Tamil words, small phrases, sentences, conversation, stories, essays with grammar. Knowing the basic Tamil grammar is the main objective of this level. Towards this objective, more focus on reading/writing will be given. Also nouns, verbs, gender etc will be covered.

நிலை 4 என்பது தமிழில் அடிப்படைத் தேர்ச்சி கொண்ட குழந்தைகளுக்காக நடத்தப்படும் இடைநிலை வகுப்பு. நிலை 3 தேர்ச்சி கட்டாயமாக எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும். அல்லது தமிழில் நல்ல தேர்ச்சி பெற்றிருக்க வேண்டும்.

இந்த வகுப்பில் சொற்கள், சிறிய சொற்றொடர்கள், உரையாடல், கதைகள், சிறிய கட்டுரைகள், இவற்றோடு இலக்கணமும் கற்பிக்கப் படுகிறது. தமிழிலக்கண அடிப்படை அறிதல் இந்நிலையின் குறிக்கோள். இதன்படி, தமிழ்ச் சொற்கள், சிறிய வாக்கியங்கள் எழுதுவது, படிப்பது ஆகியவற்றுக்குக் கவனம் செலுத்தப்படும். மற்றும் பெயர்ச் சொற்கள், வினைச் சொற்கள், பால் வகை முதலியன நடத்தப்படும்.

Level 5 - நிலை – 5

Nilai 5 class is an intermediate-advanced class conducted for children passed Nilai-4. Otherwise, children must have learned Tamil elsewhere and should be equally proficient. Curriculum is a continuation of Nilai-4.

The objective of this level is for the kids to be able to have good reading skills; simple paragraph writing and guided essay writing; and, to converse well in Tamil and understand oral instructions. 

நிலை 5 என்பது தமிழில் அடிப்படைத் தேர்ச்சி கொண்ட குழந்தைகளுக்காக நடத்தப்படும் இடைநிலை-மேல்நிலை வகுப்பு. நிலை 4 தேர்ச்சி கட்டாயமாக எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும். அல்லது தமிழில் நல்ல தேர்ச்சி பெற்றிருக்க வேண்டும்.

நிலை 4-ன் தொடர்ச்சியான இலக்கணப்பாடங்கள் நடத்தப்படும். தமிழில் சரளமாகப் பேசவும், சிறிய பத்திகள் எழுதவும், ஆசிரியர் உதவியுடன் சிறிய கட்டுரைகள் எழுதவும் பயிற்சிகள் கொடுக்கப்படும்.

The objective of this level is for the kids to be able to have good reading skills; simple paragraph writing and guided essay writing; and, to converse well in Tamil and understand oral instructions. 

நிலை 6 என்பது தமிழில் அடிப்படைத் தேர்ச்சி கொண்ட குழந்தைகளுக்காக நடத்தப்படும் இடைநிலை-மேல்நிலை வகுப்பு. நிலை 5 தேர்ச்சி கட்டாயமாக எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும். அல்லது தமிழில் நல்ல தேர்ச்சி பெற்றிருக்க வேண்டும்.

நிலை 5-ன் தொடர்ச்சியான இலக்கணப்பாடங்கள் நடத்தப்படும். தமிழில் சரளமாகப் பேசவும், சிறிய பத்திகள் எழுதவும், ஆசிரியர் உதவியுடன் சிறிய கட்டுரைகள் எழுதவும் பயிற்சிகள் கொடுக்கப்படும்.
